MARINE OTTER

The marine otter (Lontra felina) is the most endangered marine mammal in the coast of South America.

Peru is home of this threatend species, found only off the coasts of Peru and Chile.

Our work with marine otters

• The Marine Otter is a poorly documented species of otter found only in South America along the Pacific coastline. They are listed by IUCN as endangered and are becoming increasingly rare to see in Peruvian waters. They were extensively hunted both for their fur and also as competition with fisheries. Little is known about this illusive tidal species and it is unsure how many numbers are left in the wild.

• "Pierre" the marine otter was in rehabilitation in July 2012, he had been caught by a hook and left with an open wound on his right side. ORCA completed surgery on him and he successfully recovered and was released back into the ocean.
