...50 PENGUINS BACK IN THE WILD!

Penguins are the second most frequent marine patients that we admit in our Center for rehabilitation. Our Penguin Rescue and Rehabilitation Program started in 2012, during a long period of sea-lion patients abscense. Being specialized in mammals, we combined veterinary knowledge on birds with our marine mammal experience to help penguins, the only marine bird with physiological adaptations to swim and dive. After rehabilitation, our penguin patients are released back in the wild. Up to 2020, we have saved the lives of over 50 penguins!

The Humbolt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) is an endangered species in Peru, mostly affected by human impact, both direct by hunting, capture and netting, and indirect by pollution and over-fishing. Each of our rescued penguins have enhanced education, ecological values in the public at the beaches, and promoted a comprehensive relationship between humans and penguins to help reduce and prevent these issues. For over a decade, we have researched on penguin health and generated medical treatments for penguins with different syndromes, diseases and health issues: From wounds produced by nets to the severe effects of plastic ingestion, including abandonement of younlings collected from nesting grounds, ORCA has make a difference through rescue and education for these little and important sentinels of the ocean.

Up to last year, operations of ORCA's Marine Rehabilitation Center were funded with the revenue from the International Participation Programs that were canceled for all 2020 due Covid-19. We are joining efforts to raise $30,000 by allowing supporters to make a gift through ORCA Peru official paypal account. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
